This solo piece for soprano and electronics delves into the sonorities of various languages, engaging in a dialogue with sound transformations. The composition, inspired by 'entwurzelt'—a 2012 work for six singers and electronics—seeks to find meaningful expressions in an unfamiliar language. Musical shapes unfold as dramatic expressions, a common thread in many of my recent works. Syllables are selected from diverse sources and arranged based on their sound qualities rather than their semantic meanings. The close interplay between the soprano and the electronics encourages the listener to imagine its meaning. The electronics extend the soprano's vocal expressions, create harmony, build complex sound textures, and occasionally introduce elements of surprise.
Electronics
This composition utilizes a Max/MSP patch to generate the electronic sounds.
Since the singer requires her hands for gestures in front of her mouth, the electronic events are triggered with a foot pedal.
For optimal performance, the electronics should be played through two small, high-quality loudspeakers positioned on the floor behind the performer and directed upwards. This setup ensures the best acoustic blend between the soprano and the electronic sounds, preventing the impression that the electronics are emanating from the speakers.
