Since the 1980s, I have been experimenting with oil paint on glass.
In Klang-Farbe-Bewegung (1989), projections of my paintings merged with dancers’ bodies. I later photographed performers within these shifting fields of color and incorporated the images into the interactive sound panels of Tell Me! . . . a secret . . . (2007).
With Polyvision (2009), this visual language expanded into video, bringing animated paintings and choreography into dialogue.
The photographs for The Other Side grew out of a collaboration with the Harvard University Dance Program. Through improvisation, the dancers developed poses, gestures, and expressions in response to the projected images. Their bodies became both screens and active counterparts—surfaces on which painting, movement, light, and individual presence converge.
My sincere thanks go to Jill Johnson, director of the Harvard University Dance Program, and to the dancers whose images appear in the work: Lauren Balbus, Irineo Cabreros, Melanie J. Comeau, Stella Gaitani, Naze-a-ru Gonzalez, Bex Kwan, Megan Murdock, Sofie Rose Seymour, Tsung-Yun Tzeng, and Rossi L. Walter.
