Winternacht references several poems by Georg Trakl, whose work has inspired many chamber music and electroacoustic compositions over the years. For this piece, I chose texts that evoke his childhood; however, these poems and letters do not directly emerge in the composition. Instead, we hear dialogues between the two musicians that are captured and transformed by the electronics.
The electroacoustic sounds blend live processing of piano and percussion sequences with pre-prepared sound files. Essentially, the electroacoustic component extends the instrumentalists’ gestures, as the computer tracks their live playing energy to determine various parameters of the electronic processing.
