Take your time (art appreciation)

Workshop on art observation and meaning

Observing a work of art and exploring its meaning encourages students to expand their perspectives and engage with unfamiliar forms of communication. In today’s fast-paced world, we are rarely prompted to spend time with complex topics or objects. By engaging in a thoughtful investigation of a high-quality artwork, students will develop the ability to ask insightful questions and form a personal connection with the piece.

Learning outcomes

Develop strategies for engaging with an unfamiliar work of art.
Learn to formulate thoughtful questions that facilitate understanding of the unknown, rather than resorting to quick judgments.
Establish a personal connection with an unfamiliar piece by drawing on individual experiences and expectations.

The workshop will take place at an art museum, where I will pre-select works from the current exhibition. Each student will be assigned one artwork and is expected to engage with it in depth.
For one hour, students will carefully observe their assigned piece and respond to a structured questionnaire by hand, following the given order of questions. The use of computers, cell phones, or other mobile devices is not allowed.
All students must bring a notebook and a pen.

First Hour
Spend approximately 50 minutes answering the first section of questions in the order they appear.
If time allows, review and refine your earlier responses.
During the last 10 minutes, each student will receive two additional questions to answer.

Third Hour
We will revisit one or two of the selected artworks and engage in a collective discussion on the following aspects:

Foreground and background – or the absence of either
Contrast
Proportion and weight
Focal point(s) and how our eyes are guided while observing the piece
Dominant emotions evoked by the artwork

The final hour is dedicated to discussion. Each student will write a question on a piece of paper, and we will aim to address all of them.

The workshop can be adapted in its format to the needs of the group or institution.
